A big landscape, which is balanced between the male steps, the mountains and the female bright green dale, studded with all white villages. Embroideries of Tinos land, with thousands of country churches and pigeon lofts unique signs of architecture of aegaio, linked to modern life.

Mythology and History
Throughout history, Tinos has been known by many names, “Idroussa” (which means having a lot of water), “Offioussa” (which means having a lot of snakes) and also as “Aeolos's island” which comes from the fact that the island is beaten by strong northern winds all year round.

It was there where the medieval life of Tinos slowly developed from 1207 until 1715. In 1715, the Tinians surrendered to the Turkish Empire and remained under Turkish rule for one hundred years.

On January 30, 1823 the holy icon of Virgin Mary was miraculously found and it was then that Tinos became known world-wide as a centre of Orthodoxy. This can still be seen by the millions of pilgrims who visit Tinos annually. It is worthwhile noting that Tinos is referred to by many ancient Greek writers including Irodotos, Aristotle, Aristophanes and Stravon.

There are many important sites such as Kionia, the Sanctuary of Poseidon, Exombourgo and Avidos. A lot of ancient findings are also exhibited in the archaeological museum such as Amphoris, dated from the Geometrical Period, Minoan grave – stones and remains of ancient walls.
In addition, there are many areas like “the Battlefields” or “the lady's Tower” which wait for the discerning archaeologist to bring their ancient treasures to light.

Art
Tinos is also known as a center of Art. The northern part of Tinos which is called Ekso Meria, has generously given to Greece a large number of very significant artists whose innate talents have made them famous throughout the world. The most tragic of these artists was Giannoulis Halepas who influenced sculpture in the Neo-Hellenic era. Another important Tinian who in turn influenced realistic painting in Greece was Nikiforos Litras, the founder of the School of fine Arts in Athens . Nikolaos Yiziz, considered the greatest Greek painter of nineteenth century and lecturer in Munich was also born in Tinos . One of the most famous sculptures in Greece , the sculpture of Kolokotronis in Athens, was made by another Tinian local –Lazaros Sohos. Many works of art scattered throughout Europe , the Balkans and Greece bear the signature of Tinian artists. To honour theses ambassadors of Tinos, “the School of Fine Arts ” of Panormos was founded in 1956.

Fetes
It is a fortunate pilgrim or visitor who finds himself at a village fete. On this day all houses are open to visitors and neighbours a like who will find numerous tables laden with homemade delicacies. Friendly “battles” are fought outside the church among the villagers in order to decide who the guest will visit first.
Make sure not to “insult” someone by not visiting his house!! It is worth experiencing the warmth, friendliness and purity of feeling which these villagers express to every guest as it is a particularly Tinian characteristic seldom dound nowadays.
Two very unique and interesting fetes are the socio-religious festivals which take place at Tripotamos during Christmas and Ktikados during Easter. These particular fetes date back to the early Christian era.
